Artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool — but it's not a silver bullet. Recently, I set out to overhaul my CV using AI tools, expecting speed, clarity, and professionalism. What I got was... a journey.
Here's what worked, what didn't, and how to avoid the common pitfalls when using AI to write your CV.
✅ What AI Got Right
1. Structure & Formatting
AI tools are excellent at generating clean templates, using consistent layouts, bullet points, and headings. They saved me hours of formatting.
2. Buzzwords & Industry Language
The language used was polished and professional, mirroring what hiring managers look for — especially in B2B, SaaS, and FMCG roles.
3. Bullet Point Brainstorming
AI helped convert dense responsibilities into clean, digestible bullet points. Great for readability and ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems).
⚠️ What AI Got Wrong
1. Context Blindness
AI couldn’t understand the importance of certain roles. I’d spent 8 years with BulbShare — yet it was buried like a footnote. AI lacks judgment about what matters most.
2. Formatting Fumbles
Even after multiple revisions, formatting glitches slipped through — page breaks in odd places, inconsistent bulleting, and unintentional font changes. It took manual edits to get it presentation-ready.
3. Mixing Freelance and Full-Time Work
AI struggled to distinguish between freelance consulting and full-time roles. I had to manually correct role titles, timelines, and the context behind each position.
💡 Lessons Learned
-
Use AI for the grunt work, not the final say. Treat it as a co-pilot — not the captain.
-
Always humanize your story. Your career has nuance; AI can't tell it for you.
-
Details matter. Fonts, bullets, dates, colors — review everything before hitting send.
